3D printers have come this far! For the production of essential items such as high-strength jigs and robot hands for work sites
09/11/2022
Takahiro NakamuraSupervisor
This is Nakamura of Nihon Denkei (Thailand). Until now, 3D printers have been used mainly for R&D (research and development) and prototype making. In general, R&D was done in Japan, and downstream production processes were carried out in Southeast Asia. However, this situation has been gradually changing in recent years. Recently, works are being performed outside of Japan including R&D, and the technology of digital solutions itself, including 3D printers, is also evolving rapidly.
In this article, together with Mr. Ushio of Data Design Solutions Thailand Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Data Design"), which provides 3D technologies and solutions for various industries mainly in the manufacturing, we will introduce the features and utilization of 3D printers from Markforged handled by the company.
Composite 3D printer from Markforged
“The 3D printing technology we would mainly like to recommend is that of Markforged, a US-based product. It was the first 3D printer manufacturer to put long-fiber to practical use, and its products have been widely adopted in the field of jig and final product manufacturing beyond the prototype area," says Mr. Ushio of Data Design.
Composite 3D printer from Markforged: Industrial Series
Features of the Industrial Series ✓ Large molding area (molding area: 330x270x200mm), applicable to large jigs ✓ Use of Onyx, a proprietary material, and carbon fiber enable production of high-strength and high-precision products ✓ One and only insert molding in the industry and warp-resistant ✓ Measuring function enable a user to measure and maintain quality while molding ✓ The same quality can be produced by anyone ✓ In the field of prototyping, it is being introduced as a functional prototype that performs operation tests
▲Onyx
▲Bending strength comparison test with PLA and ABS (Onyx is the first left)
▲Comparative test of flexural strength of carbon fiber and aluminum (Onyx on the left)
Onyx combines high strength and rigidity, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including jig manufacturing.

Want to produce final products and practical products with digital processes
“Markforged is a uniquely positioned company that does not see itself as a 3D printer manufacturer, but as a provider of digital process manufacturing. It has a strong desire to produce final products and practical applications through digital process. While the company is a hardware sales company, it utilizes the cloud and constantly upgrades its software to the latest version to improve product performance. This concept is in line with ours, and we would like to actively propose Markforged as a solution in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
It is the first 3D printer manufacturer to receive ISO27001 certification, so we can be assured of security." (Mr. Ushio of Data Design)
In-house jig manufacturing with a 3D printer!?
Over the past few years, 3D printers have been increasingly used to manufacture jigs. Every production plant has jigs, but many companies outsource then. Jigs are generally produced in small lots, and it takes one to three weeks per case, but with a 3D printer, they can be produced with the push of a button in five or six hours.
90% of customers in Japan who have installed the printer from Markforged use it for jig manufacturing. That shows how much time and money can be saved by replacing jig manufacturing with 3D printers.
Proposing solutions to maximize the use of 3D technology
At Data Design, it does not simply sell software and hardware products; its strength lies in its ability to provide total support for how 3D technology can be utilized.
●As a coordinator, it provides a combination of the most suitable software and hardware from 30 to 40 types according to the customer's request ●May develop products that are not available ●Proposes how to make the best use of 3D technology products ●Flexible support for maintenance and troubleshooting
Data Design and Nihon Denkei will continue to work together to propose optimal products and technology applications in Thailand.
Data Design Solutions Thailand Co., Ltd. Established in 2002 as a Thai subsidiary of Data Design Co., Ltd., which provides the world's leading 3D / digital technologies and products.
