Do you know how the Cold Chain works?
It is a system that performs a series of distributions from the production site to the consumer are carried out with appropriate temperature control. By transporting food at appropriately controlled temperatures, it is possible to deliver food to consumers while maintaining freshness and quality, leading to food safety and reducing food loss due to spoilage during transportation.
However, in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, this is a field that still needs to be developed.
As the name suggests, it is important for the chain to be connected as shown in the figure, but in Thailand, fragmentation is occurring especially at various points.
In this article, we will introduce Fruehauf Mahajak Co., Ltd. (hereafter, FMC), which is a member of the Nippon Light Metal Group, same as our company and plays a role in building the cold chain together with us, and how we contribute the role of our two companies in the cold chain.
FMC has a factory in Nong Chok, Bangkok, and manufactures, sells, and repairs truck bodies (hereafter, bodies). Bodies are boxes that combine a cold insulator and a refrigerator on the back of the truck. They can be used for refrigeration and freezing, making it possible to transport refrigerated and frozen foods such as meat, vegetables, and ice cream while keeping their quality. FMC has introduced manufacturing technology cultivated over many years in Japan to produce high-quality, well-cooled bodies that protect perishable foods from damage and contribute to food loss and food safety.
In addition to temperature-controlled bodies, the company also develops and sells the lightweight body “KaruBo,” which is effective in easing congestion in urban areas and reducing CO2 emissions. Due to laws and regulations, a 2-ton truck could not run for 24 hours in central Bangkok, but we increased the amount of aluminum used and developed a very lightweight body while keeping strength, enabling the truck to run anytime of 24 hours. As a result, a single truck can carry the amount of cargo that used to be carried by two or three pickup trucks, greatly contributing to easing traffic congestion and reducing CO2 emissions in the central part of the city.
In addition, the factory has an exhibition room called "Cold Chain College" where visitors can learn about the cold chain. The company will continue their activities to spread the cold chain in Thailand and pursue food safety and deliciousness.
The core of the cold chain is "storage" and "transportation" with appropriate temperature control. Nikkei Siam Aluminium (hereafter, NSA) provides a wide range of products, from small prefabricated refrigerators (KANTAN Cooling Unit) for producers and retailers, to interior insulation panels for large facilities such as food processing plants and distribution warehouses, in high quality with following Japanese technology.
FMC provides high-quality truck bodies to support the transportation in the cold chain, such as producers to intermediate storage facilities (distribution warehouses) to intermediate storage facility (distribution warehouse) to retailers, and so on.
We both provide products and services to reduce food loss while maintaining food safety, and to furnish a high-quality cold chain in Thailand. If you have any questions about cold chain in Thailand, please contact us at Nippon Light Metal Group!
