OKUMA TECHNO (THAILAND) provides high-performance machine tools in Thailand and the ASEAN region based on the philosophy of “mechatronics integration.” The company celebrated its 20th anniversary on February 29, 2020.
The GENOS series is the company's flagship product in the ASEAN region. Its cumulative sales volume is around 900 in Thailand and around 18,000 worldwide. (As of the end of 2019) This article focuses on the reason why the GENOS series is popular in the ASEAN region.
"GENOS" means "gene" in Greek and meaning of "the reliable world standard machine that inherits the genes of OKUMA is put into it.
The GENOS series is a series full of OKUMA’s thriving genes that have been developed utilizing the know-how of the best-selling machines, the “MB-V” series (machining center) and the “LB” series (horizontal lathe). In order to provide high quality products while inheriting the company's greatest features of high surface finish and precision stability, it has been possible to produce products at reasonable prices and with ease by limiting to simple specifications.
■ High rigidity / high quality / precision stability
・ High rigidity body structure utilizing 3D-CAD design and FEM analysis
・ Main body structure with little overhang
・ Apply thermo-friendly concept
⇒ Within 8 ㎛ of processing dimension change when environmental room temperature changes by 8 ℃ (GENOS M series actual value)
■ Limit use of options and suppress prices
・ Reduce costs by limiting the corresponding option specifications.
■ Abundant machine specifications for mass production lines
・ Possible to support from chuck work to complicated bar-shaped work
・ Process consolidation by adding milling function
・ Supports mass production by connecting to stockers, and loaders from one loader per machine
■ Machine design pursuing ease of use
・ User-friendly design considering workability from the customer's viewpoint
・ Excellent chip processing performance in pursuit of high operation efficiency
Why is OKUMA's GENOS series continuing to be introduced in Thailand and the ASEAN region? The answer lies in the good balance between quality and price.
There is another reason for the reasonable price of the series besides the limited options.
It is designed in Japan and produced in Taiwan.
In general, machines that are designed and manufactured in Japan tend to be of high specification, and the price increases accordingly. On the other hand, machines designed and manufactured in Taiwan and China have differences in motors and control units compared to those made in Japan. The quality of Taiwan-made products has been improving in recent years. However, the fact is that the longer it is used, the greater the difference in quality of “sustainability”.
OKUMA designs the core of the machine in Japan and manufactures it at its Taiwan factory. By doing so, both high quality and reasonable prices are achieved.
The factory produces machines for OKUMA's global market, including the GENOS series.
A new factory started operation in August 2018 with the aim of expanding production capacity and increasing efficiency.
The total floor area of the new factory is 14,300 square meters, 1.8 times that of the old factory.
With the increase in processing equipment and the promotion of automation, the processing capacity of parts has increased by five times, and the in-house processing of parts has been expanded.
As a result, the production capacity has been increased by 1.5 times (200 to 300 units per month).
OKUMA provides technical support and after-sales service at each base in the ASEAN countries.
In order to provide peace of mind to customers who have introduced our products in their factories, Japan, Taiwan and other countries will work together as a group to provide products and services to the customers.
