Okuma Corporation's machining center "MCR-S (Super)" and "MB-80V" both won the "50th Machine Industry Design Award IDEA" sponsored by the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun in 2020.

It was a great encouragement for us to receive the award for two models at the same time, after a comprehensive evaluation of not only the appearance of the product but also the quality, safety, economy and marketability.

In this article, we will introduce the details of the award-winning models.


Ultra-high precision and process-intensive support for press dies 5-face double-column machining center "MCR-S (Super)”

A single unit solves multiple problems in die and mold machining (cycle time, accuracy, area step, and machined surface quality). It is equipped with intelligent technology that allows the machine to autonomously optimize itself without depending on a technician.



Product features

① Mechanical structure that realizes high-speed and high-precision machining

〇 By adopting the optimum cooling structure for each sliding surface and structure, an average continuous cutting feed of 20m/min for the XY axis and 10m/min for the Z axis has been achieved. (Fastest in its equivalent class)

〇 Equipped with a "Thermo Friendly Concept", a thermal displacement control technology that maintains high precision and stability throughout a wide machining space. The machine design that further adjusts the thermal balance of the column and other parts suppressing Z-axis tilt occurs with ambient temperature change. Even with a long period of operation, it is possible to minimize the thermo displacement to reduce the time required for hand finishing.


② Advanced, high surface quality technology that dramatically reduces polishing work

〇 Hyper Surface automatically compensates for the disturbances in the parts machining program that leads to a defective machining surface, achieving high quality surfaces without streaks, and achieving high shape accuracy.


③ Automatic measurement of tool length with a swivel type laser sensor

〇 The swivel type laser sensor eliminates cutting-edge position error caused by differences in indexing angle and rotation speed of the machining tool, and minimizes the area step error.

What is the Thermo Friendly Concept?
Okuma's unique concept of accepting (1) ambient temperatures around the machine, (2) heat generated by the machine, and (3) heat generated by machining, enables high-accuracy machining in a normal factory environments by the user.
What is Hyper-Surface?
In addition to the Sculptured-Surface Adaptive Acceleration Control featured in the previous Super-NURBS, it is a function to detect CAM-output machining data disturbance, and correct that on NC to improve the surface quality while maintaining the shape accuracy.
