Technoplast (Thailand) specializes in high-precision plastic cutting in Thailand. With the end of the long pandemic in sight, President Nakamura from the Japan headquarters (Technoplast Co., Ltd.) and Managing Director Shonan from the Thai subsidiary came Thailand. In our interview, they shared insights into their efforts during the pandemic and their future prospects.
When people think of plastics, they often imagine molding and large-scale processing. However, Technoplast offers the flexibility to handle orders starting from just one item. The company excels in providing high-precision resin processed products with short delivery times, a capability that is quite rare in Thailand.
In 2012, when President Nakamura had just taken on his role, he visited Thailand in search of overseas expansion opportunities and felt a "thrill as if meeting a first love."
"There are many Japanese companies that have established operations in Thailand, and I sensed a trend towards local production and consumption. I thought there might be a demand for our high-precision cutting technology, which offers small-lot production, as added value will be demanded in the future." (President Nakamura)
President Nakamura, who acts swiftly on his ideas, quickly established a local sales company in Thailand and spent several years on-site, dedicating himself to sales activities.
In 2014, the company secured a rental factory and established Technoplast (Thailand) as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese headquarters, setting up local processing capabilities. The business has since grown steadily, and in 2020, due to a shortage of machine space, it relocated and expanded into its own factory.
President Nakamura believes that "the growth of people is the growth of the company." Therefore, he views creating an environment and systems that foster individual development as his primary mission as a leader.
"We place great importance on fostering a "positive" atmosphere within the company. People are naturally drawn to cheerful environments. Regardless of the situation, we focus on maintaining a positive outlook and doing what we can. Whether it’s with people or companies, we aim to work together and create something new,” says President Nakamura.
Embracing their positive approach to new challenges, the company explored opportunities specifically brought about by the pandemic. As part of a headquarters project, they developed and launched the original non-contact COVID-19 prevention product, "Mr. Non-Touch."
"Most of the products we usually make are industrial parts, but 'Mr. Non-Touch' is used in everyday life. We believed that working on something so directly impactful would boost employee morale." (President Nakamura)
Using Mr. Non-Touch as a catalyst, we actively engaged with the media in Japan to raise our company's profile and increase recognition."
The development of "Mr. Non-Touch" was led by Mr. Shonan, the current Managing Director of the Thai subsidiary.
With years of experience working in an equipment company in Thailand, President Nakamura has high expectations for Managing Director Shonan.
"Coming from a different industry, I sometimes take different approaches, but I’m grateful to President Nakamura for allowing me to try out my suggestions." (MD Shonan)
"In Thailand, where demand for high precision is growing, precision plastic processing is still relatively rare, presenting us with significant opportunities. With the pandemic winding down, I'm eager to take on new challenges with our new factory and setup." (President Nakamura)
