In Vol.1, we introduced the importance of tool surface treatment and cutting edge machining and the cutting tool surface treatment device from Magnetfinish. In Vol.2, we will introduce a wet blasting device suitable for large cutting tools and a barrel polishing device suitable for metalworking parts with complex shapes.
In contrast to dry sand blasting, wet blasting is a device that mixes a liquid called compound into media and sprays it to polish. Since the workpiece gets wet after the treatment, it is necessary to wipe off the moisture to prevent rust, which requires more work than the dry type, while the wet type has overwhelmingly higher treatment performance and a smoother finish.
Wet type is particularly suitable for so-called high-class cutting tools such as hobs and brooches. Compared to drills and end mills, these tools are bigger in size, have a larger diameter, and have a greater difference in unevenness, so the wet type has the spray reaching more thoroughly than the dry type, resulting in a cleaner surface.
In addition, the GRAF wet blasting device compact series enables automatic processing by controlling the tool's rotation and revolution. In the past, in sand blasting, a person manually held an object and put it in a box, and a gun nozzle was operated by the human hand. With this device, the nozzle automatically follows the shape of the tool, enabling surface treatment at the optimum angle and distance.
Among the surface treatments, barrel polishing is a method in which the media is in the kiln, and the workpiece is placed in it and rotated to polish the surface. The company's barrel polishing device Walther Trowal: Barrel polishing device M-TMD series supports various surface finishes such as deburring, R-forming, and mirror finishing through high-speed rotation and revolution.
Particularly, machine parts processed in machining centers are considered to be effective workpiece targets. It is suitable for surface treatment of complex metalworking parts such as automobile engine blocks and transmissions because the media automatically enters the inside of the parts and polishes them while rotating at high speed.
・ Automobile engine blocks and transmissions
・ Turbine blade (aircraft parts)
・ Ship screw propeller
・ Cutting tools
etc.
We have introduced three types of surface treatment devices with different features in the previous article and this one.
At YKT, we can propose more detailed specifications and specific model numbers of each device, as well as suggestions according to the machining situation. Please consider this as a process to add more value to tools and parts.
