Drilling a small hole with high accuracy and depth has been a challenge.
The carbide tool for deep hole drilling "Crea Borer" introduced here has successfully solved this problem, which could not be achieved with conventional drilling tools.
It is highly accurate, easy chip disposal, and does not require extensive machine tools. We are confident that this product, which can be mounted on general-purpose machines, will open up new markets.
In this article, we introduce the features and innovativeness of Crea Borer together with one of its developers, Mr. Nishimura of Goal Co., Ltd.
The Crea Borer was developed by Hiroshima-based machine tool manufacturer Nishiken Inc. and Osaka-based lock manufacturer Goal Co., Ltd. It can drill holes as deep as 20 times the diameter of the blade, depending on the type of material to be processed.
How innovative is it? It is common to use a spiral drill when trying to drill a deep hole in metal, but this method inevitably results in large misalignments. Chip biting that occurs when drilling holes was also a problem. This is because the conventional stepping motion causes tool breakage, slanted hole, and inaccuracy.
In the first place, a special NC machine tool is essential for deep hole machining. Deep hole drilling is only possible with machines equipped with an internal lubrication system that allows coolant to flow from inside the cutting tool. It must be said that deep hole machining is a very high hurdle for small factories.
The Crea Borer is a tool that solves all these problems. By changing the shape of the cutting edge, the chips are discharged from the bore in a single bundle. No need to clean up chips. The risk of tool trouble has been eliminated.
Crea Borer is a product created through collaboration between Nishiken and a lock manufacturer, Goal. Originally engaged in the resharpening of cutting tools, Nishiken gradually began to develop custom-made tools to meet customers' needs. In the process, the company succeeded in developing a tool for drilling straight holes, a precursor to the Crea Borer, at Goal's request. After considering whether this could be released for the general public, both companies succeeded in achieving a groundbreaking deep-hole tool following four-year development period. The tool has already been patented not only in Japan, but also internationally in six countries: the United States, Israel, Germany, Italy, France, and Sweden.
In September 2022, YKT Europe introduced the Crea Borer at a trade show in Germany which the company exhibited, and received a great response. A succession of people said, "This is amazing," and the product was also exhibited using part of YKT Thailand's space at METALEX 2022. In response to the positive feedback received there, it led to full-scale exhibition at METALEX 2023.
Until now, when drilling deep holes, design has been based on the premise that misalignment would occur. Misalignment was natural, and was the norm. This inevitably required extra parts and increased costs. However, with the Crea Borer, costs can be controlled.
Since it is a tool for deep hole machining that has never existed before, we believe that it will encourage various ideas and contribute to the birth of new technologies and products that will change the world in the future.
